Sleigh explores the rocky minefield of memory--not just the events of the past but also the nature of recollection itself. He fills his description of an adolescent jaunt into a park to score some heroin with adult contemplation, thereby changing it into a mixture of present and past attitudes. What might have been distanced by the adult perspective is yet rendered with relentless honesty as he writes of a fellow addict friend, "now the blood-webbed whites of his eyes / Roll up, his lips sag open, the syllables dragging across / His tongue dragging in my ears: Dude, want to get killed?"
