Since 1942, when the federal government began to recruit women into the war effort, more and more women have moved into salaried jobs, generating a historical shift that has been called "the greatest change since the industrial Revolution."

Until now, this invasion of male territory has never been documented as a whole, or in the words of women themselves. Judith Finlayson travelled across Canada from the Gulf Islands in British Columbia to Newfoundland, and as far north as Yellowknife, interviewing two hundred women in their twenties to their nineties, and presents their stories--some uplifting, some heartbreaking--in their own words.
