This book describes best practices for coping with antisocial behavior patterns among children and youth in school. Designed to enhance educators understanding of the nature, origins and causes of antisocial behavior, this book offers interventions and model programs that can be used in preventing or remediating this growing problem in the schools. .Universal intervention approaches aimed at prevention are offered in Chapters 3, 4, and 5 and cover: 1) establishing a school-wide discipline plan; 2) implementing practices and strategies that contribute to effective schooling and academic achievement; 3) managing teacher-student interactions effectively; and 4) conducting social skills training for entire classrooms of students. Chapters 5, 6, 7, and 8 cover selected remediation interventions such as: 1) intensive social skills instruction procedures (a pull out program that may include a small group of normal peers); 2) individualized behavior management and support programs in the classroom that prevent escalated, hostile teacher-student confrontations; 3) a combined social skills training and individualized behavior management program for use on the playground in improving the antisocial students social interactions, peer relations, and ability to abide by playground rules; and 4) procedures for involving parents.

About the Author:
Hill M. Walker is one of the nation's leading authorities on antisocial behavior and school safety programs. He is the co-director of the University of Oregon's Institute on Violence and Destructive Behavior (IVDB). Walker's research interests include social skills assessment and intervention, violence prevention, early intervention, school safety, and longitudinal research. Dr. Walker received the Council for Exceptional Children Research Award in 1993, and the University of Oregon Presidential Medal in 2000. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Oregon Social Learning Center and is a consultant to the Citizens Crime Commission, an affiliate of the Portland, Oregon, Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.
