"...absorbing debut novel...an emotionally wrenching narrative out of U.S. history."--Kirkus Reviews.“...seek out the book...Simmons’ layered, full-bodied character of Mary, a hard-working young girl who runs away from her family rather than accept a polygamist’s proposal.”—Salt Lake Tribune In 1905, the law denouncing polygamy by the Mormon Church is fully enforced. Second families must go into hiding or be arrested. There is even a “finder’s fee” for those who turn in their own. Ten-year-old Mary’s father, a poor farmer, abandons Mary, her nearly-blind mother, and six brothers and sisters in the hills of the Wasatch Mountains to live in a shallow dugout not much better than a cave. Close to starving, the family is rescued by a nearby polygamist. As the much older man's intentions become more threatening, Mary finds it harder and harder to resist his proposal of marriage. Her family and friends, even her own mother, turn away from her. During the six-year period, from Mary's childhood to a forced marriage at sixteen, Mary must first survive, and then choose her fate. This is the story of survival, love, and compassion in a sometimes heartless existence. It is also the story of Mary's deep conflict with the Church's teachings on plural marriage, and with her father, who has abandoned them. Based on a true story.

About the Author:
I come from a writing family. My great-aunt, Virginia Sorensen, is the author of sixteen books, one of them a Newbery winner. Many of her books were inspired by family stories and her experiences with the Mormon Church. I suppose I am in my own way following in her big footsteps.

"That I do not accept the faith that possessed them does not mean I doubt their frequent devotion and heroism in its service. Especially their women. Their women were incredible."--Wallace Stegner, The Gathering of Zion.

I begin with this quote because it is the women of the early faith I'm drawn to. The strength that was required of them is almost incomprehensible. And yet they encircled themselves and their families within it. It is for them I write.

Kelly L. Simmons was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, but spent most of her growing up years in Montana.
She received her B.A. from the University of Montana and her M.F.A. from Queens University in Charlotte, NC.
Her stories have appeared in "Prick of the Spindle," "Lost Coast Review," and "Scintilla Press."
She is married with one daughter, and makes her home in Bozeman, Montana, loving the outdoors and the people around her.

An elderly woman reflects on her early years living as a Mormon on the run in author Simmons' absorbing debut novel, based on a true story....In a genre saturated with faux apocalyptic tales of teens in peril, here's an emotionally wrenching narrative out of U.S. history.
...Powerful, historically based novel of survival, beliefs, adaptation and resistance.
