Gr 6-9-A tragic accident left Emily Shepherd scarred for many years, both physically and emotionally. Now she is hoping to start a new life in the new house into which her family has just moved. But the ninth grader is still apprehensive about her new face and wondering if she can start again, until she meets Rowan, who is friendly but obviously frightened about something. Rowan shares with Emily a love of art, reading, imagination, and the tree house in Emily's backyard. The two find sanctuary there and their friendship quickly grows. Rowan is holding something back from Emily, however, which leaves Emily wondering how good a friend she really is to Rowan. The plot is simple, but the characterization is excellent. Readers get a real sense of the strength of the Shepherd family, and it's refreshing that Emily clearly adores and respects her stepfather. The secondary characters are not as fully fleshed out, especially Rowan's parents; readers must interpret between the lines that her father is abusing his daughter and his wife. Also, the cause of Emily's accident and its aftermath are never quite clear. Overall, though, the book is an enjoyable coming-of-age story with which many readers will identify.-Shilo Halfen, Chicago Public Library
