Tells the story of the building of the Berlin Wall from its genesis in the Allies' race for Berlin through the completion of the 99-mile barrier in 1961

From Library Journal:
Gelb presents a fairly complete history and description of the wall, from its geographical parameters to its geopolitical significance, from its philosophical and functional architects to its detractors and apologists. The book is at its breathless best in recounting the stringing of the first strands of barbed wire in August 1961, and in describing the innovative attempts of East Germans to escape . Gelb was a correspondent for the Mutual Broadcasting Network in Berlin during the wall's construction. His writing style is very much popular journalism, and one almost expects to read comic book-like expletives. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the book will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers. Gelb does raise an interesting question, though he does not pursue it far enough. Can the wall be seen, in all its scarred ugliness, as a positive force for world peace? Jeff Northrup, Birmingham P.L., Ala.

The London Bookworm
(East Sussex, United Kingdom)

Book Description Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. The author tells how the Wall grew from the confusions of the post-war years, when the Soviet Union and the Western powers, sharing occupation of the capital city of their humbled wartime enemy, set the stage for the Cold War. He describes the grim episodes on the way towards the final division of the city - the Berlin blockade, the bloody East Berlin workers' uprising, and the mass migration westward of East German refugees through Berlin. And he shows how this humiliating exodus, which threatened the stability of the entire Soviet East European empire, could be stopped only by the building of the Berlin Wall. The story is one of power politics and global brinkmanship, of hawks and doves, of brilliant caculation and an intelligence failure of dazzling proportions. it is about the confrontation over Berlin between John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khruschev - two of the most exciting political persoanalities of recent times - and about how the building of the Wall graduated into a nuclear showdown between the superpowers. The author was there on that August night twenty-five years ago when Berlin was broken in two, and his personal experiences help define the tragedy of the divided city. Though it represents failure to both sides, the Berlin Wall is still there, still dissecting one of the great cities of Europe, still enfolding and quarantining the only island of political freedom to survive behind Communist lines. Illustrated. 298 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
