Gillian Linscott worked as a journalist for the Guardian and the BBC before turning to full-time crime writing. Her novels featuring the suffragette detective Nell Bray have won her the CWA/Ellis Peters Historical Dagger 2000 and the Herodotus Award for Best International Historical Mystery Novel. The apparent suicide of 19-year old Verona North drives her father's cousin, suffragette Nell Bray, to investigate the death as a possible murder. It's 1914 in England, and Nell must contend with persecution from the government, suspicion from the family, and a host of colorful anarchists and other characters who were part of Verona's life. This gives Lin Sagovsky a chance to exercise her ability with voices; she's especially good with the women. Her first-person narration as Nell brings out the suffragette's intelligence and independence. The dénouement is less interesting than the period details--crackling phones, vicious anti-feminist police, and Great War clouds on the horizon.
