This book provides a chance to test one's judgment against that of Heyman, an experienced photographer ( LIFE , Magnum ), and Durniak, a photo editor for the New York Times. Independently they review a 36-negative contact sheet or selected slides from each of 25 assignments and choose the "right" picture from each. Printed contact sheets are followed by comments from each man on the assignment, reasons for their choices, and enlargements of the frames chosen. The photographer's choices are governed by his involvement with the situation; the editor uses the criteria of a strong image, intrinsic information, and the technical requirements of reproduction.
