Gr. 1-3. The strength of the Let's Create series of craft books lies in the numerous full-color photographs that accompany the step-by-step instructions. Each title's 12 activities are collected around a theme: Clay covers simple sculpting methods and requires a special self-hardening clay; Paper gets creative with materials that kids and teachers are more likely to have on hand--though a few oddly specific items (a "small paper ball," a "multicolored paper garland") may necessitate improvisation. The emphasis here is on clarity rather than showy perfectionism, so children have a realistic chance of producing something resembling the photo, such as an attractive clay candleholder or a bouquet of pretty crepe-paper flowers. Boxed tips suggest variations that will prompt kids to think of additional ways to apply their newly learned techniques. These crafts may not be earth shattering, but they're precisely presented and well within a child's reach. Jennifer Mattson
