Set in the late 17th-century Scottish Highlands, this rousing historical epic from the best-selling author of the "Brides of Culdee Creek" inspirational romance series follows the adventures of Killian Campbell, a young, spirited American who seeks to escape her abusive husband, Alexander, and return to America with her young son. She barely manages to get out of the Campbell ancestral castle when Alexander catches her. A stranger intervenes and kills Alexander but is caught by Alexander's vengeful kin and revealed to be Ruarc MacDonald, adding fuel to an existing feud between the Campbell and MacDonald clans. Killian manages to save Ruarc from immediate execution and returns with him to his manor, where the priest urges them to marry, saying that it is God's will. But both resist this fate for reasons of their own. Meanwhile, the Campbells and other enemies threaten their future. The intrusion of a modern feminist viewpoint in relation to the treatment and role of women may alienate period purists but does not detract from Morgan's well-written, exciting, and action-packed story. Although this is purely historical fiction, expect some crossover appeal to fans of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" time-traveling series, especially those who prefer their Highlands action to be clean-cut and faith-based. Recommended for all collections.
