Winner 1995 Certificate of Commendation from The American Association of State and Local History.
Lynn, Mass. was a hotbed of Union support when twenty-year-old Joseph E. Hodgkins enlisted 11 Aug 1862 as one of Lynn's many recruits. He kept a detailed and introspective diary from 11 Aug 1862 through 3 July 1865. He was in the thick of some of the most bitter fighting, being wounded at Fredericksburg, VA in 1862 and Petersburg, VA 22 June 1864, on which day he was captured. His diary brings the war, and his period of captivity, vividly alive. Highly recommended to students of the Civil War, of Lynn, Mass., and of the Hodgkins family.
