About the Author:
Tim Rice has been a devotee of the sport of thoroughbred racing since his first pre-adolescent Fair Grounds visit in the company of his father. Through his life he has traveled almost every avenue of the game, from handicapper-bettor to owner, breeder, trainer, and even exercise rider. He has also been a long time commentator on Triple Crown Races for New Orleans sports talk radio stations. Since graduating from L.S.U., he has made a career in the stock market as a broker, analyst, and trader. He is currently managing partner of Rice, Voelker LLC, a New Orleans-based stock brokerage he co-founded in 1996. Although writing has been an avocation, Tim and his annual study of the Kentucky Derby were profiled in a front-page story in the Wall Street Journal. Warren Buffet's partner, Charles T. Munger, also cited them in his book, Poor Charlie's Almanack. Tim's short stories have been finalists in fiction competitions sponsored by the Faulkner Society of New Orleans and the Thoroughbred Times. Following Katrina in 2005, the partners of his firm formed the Rice Voelker Fund for Recovery to aid victims of the storm and charities dedicated to them. Contributions to the fund from clients, friends, and firm partners total nearly $1 million. That fund will receive 100% of net proceeds from this book. Tim and his wife, Jennifer, a real estate agent, are both active equestrians. He plays polo, and she shows hunters. They live with their three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and their horses at Innisfree Farm in Folsom, Louisiana.
Review:
With the bloody but unbowed nobility of the TRUE Rail Rat, Tim Rice hits the Trifecta of thrills, inside juice and an infectious lust for the Sport of Kings. Ya can't lose its a SURE THING! --John Goodman, Emmy and Golden Globe winning actor
The chapter on Sunday Silence (Silence is Golden) is one of the finest pieces of writing about horse racing I've ever read. Tim Rice captures the true essence of the beauty and mystique that thoroughbred horse racing has enjoyed for hundreds of years. --Chris McCarron, Hall of Fame Jockey
Broke in a Tangle recounts some of my favorite racing moments. Tim Rice's stories have appeal for professionals in the sport, as well as the racing fan. --W. I. Bill Mott, Hall of Fame Trainer
