I first discovered the value of writing stories with kids at home as I helped my own children deal with changes, feelings, and unexpected events in our lives. I learned that when I told them about something new (bad or otherwise), they often forgot important aspects of what I said or became confused about details. I realized they needed an opportunity to "see" what I was saying. This led to the natural conclusion that if I made them a book, they could see the parts of each event in their own story, and they could also hear the story over and over again. Reading it together could provide us both with the warmth of a very special exchange.

About the Author:
Robert G. Ziegler, MD, is a child psychiatrist at the Boundaries Therapy Center, Acton, Massachusetts, and Co-Director of the Child Outpatient Service at Cambridge Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Cambridge.
