Review:
*An evocative, lyrical debut novel...with a vivid, complex heroine*—*Kirkus Reviews*
*... the evocative story of Dellie, a Caribbean immigrant to New York at the beginning of the last century,...told with great attention to the details of Dellie's time, place, and culture. In describing one woman's journey with such specificity and empathy, Jennifer Carey honors every immigrant and the universal fears, hopes, struggles, and joys of every outsider. A moving exploration of how we navigate our lives, what we leave behind, and what we carry with us. * *Eleni N. Gage*—*Other Waters; North of Ithaka*
*...a rare evocation of the lives of labouring families on a sugar plantation at the turn of the 20th century. The novel also celebrates a marriage of Barbadian and Brooklyn through the wave of migration which links the islands to the American mainland. * *George Lamming—**In the Castle of My Skin*
* ... a story of love, destiny and hope set against a background of immigrant life. The story as told has such a ring of authenticity that one can’t help wondering how much of it is biographical and how much is pure fiction. The book is a valuable addition to the literature on Barbadian and indeed Caribbean immigrant life in the USA. It is a worthy companion to Paule Marshall’s* *Brown Girl, Brown Stones.* *Edison T. Williams* –*Facing North: Tales from Bathsheba*
