Pat F. Garrett, born in Alabama in 1850, worked as a cowboy and buffalo hunter in Texas. By 1878 he had drifted to the Pecos in eastern New Mexico and was elected sheriff of wild Lincoln County in the fall of 1880. He also served as sheriff of Dona Ana County, New Mexico, and commander of rangers in Wheeler County, Texas. The Southwest's most celebrated sheriff, he is best known for his killing of Billy the Kid and for his book, The Authentic Life of Billy, the Kid, which was written in collaboration with his friend, frontier newspaperman Ashmun Upson.
