A young girl helps Mommy dress up for an evening out.

The air is full of tickles.
I can hear my Mommy humming.
It's a party!
Could be dinner!
Maybe company is coming?

A young girl is excited by her mother's bustling activity, until she realizes Mommy is going out for the evening without her. Still, mommies take a lot of getting ready before they go, and this mommy needs an extra special helper to make those crucial dress-up decisions.

Before long, mother and daughter are caught up in a whirlwind of bubble baths and cold creams, strappy shoes and fancy dresses. Each step of preparation comes with its own smells and sounds and textures and colors, all leading to the most important decision of all: which lipstick to wear? After all, these bright red kisses hold the promise of Mommy's return and she does always come home after a great night out.

Teresa Toten has created a textured tale attired in rhyming text, satiny sounds, and brilliant images. Together with Deirdre Betteridge's richly colored and flowing illustrations, Bright Red Kisses perfectly captures a child's perspective of this grown-up ritual.

About the Author:

Teresa Toten is a children's book reviewer and critically acclaimed young adult novelist. This is her first picture book. She lives in Toronto.

Review:
The premise is very sweet... Betteridge's watercolors echo the activity level and myriad choices found in the rhyming verse. Cute. (Kirkus Reviews 2005-10-15)

The whimsical watercolor figures waft across pages decorated with the embellishments of the sparkling evening: shoes, makeup, bubbles overspilling a bath. Mothers who are going out for the evening will like having this captivating volume on hand. (Ilene Cooper Booklist 2006-01-01)

Much to her credit, Kyi hasn't spent a moment writing down to her audience. The result is a fascinating look through the history of the indispensable piece of modern attire: jeans. From the "invention" of blue jeans by Levi Strauss in California in the 1870s -- something sturdy for miners to wear on the gold fields -- through depression-era families clad in the durable pants in the 1930s, through jeans' arrival as a fashion statement in the 1970s and 80s right through to the sweatshop issues we didn't get around to thinking about until quite recently. If you've ever wondered about jeans, the answer is probably here. And if you've never wondered, you'll find the answer anyway. (Linda L. Richards January Magazine, Holiday Gift Guide 2005-12-01)
