Share the wonder and diversity of our global neighbors through culture-based story times! Each chapter of this book highlights a specific country or cultural group, offering recommended books to read aloud and stories appropriate for flannel board, overhead projector, or simple puppetry presentations. Fingerplays, action rhymes, songs, games or activities, puppet patterns and instructions, and directions for other simple, inexpensive crafts accompany the stories. In addition, each chapter includes bibliographies of other resources. Chapters cover Australia, Brazil, the Caribbean, Egypt, Ghana, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Vietnam, and American Indians. A perfect resource for the children's librarian, the book will also be treasured by elementary school librarians and teachers.

From Booklist:
Sample story times for preschoolers and for children in kindergarten through third grade are at the heart of this bountiful guide to multicultural story times. Alphabetically arranged by 14 countries, regions, or groups (e.g. Native Americans), each chapter opens with a small map that places the spot in a world context. Following greetings in the major language of each locale is an annotated bibliography of books to read aloud. Next, comes a citation to the text for a puppet play, flannel board story, oral story, or a combination of the three, accompanied by patterns and instructions. This same approach is repeated for fingerplays, action rhymes, etc. Source notes are provided for recommended media (usually a video or filmstrip). For those with the time or energy, craft activities with annotated lists of resources round out each section. It takes a while to figure out the organization, but this book should be useful in libraries and, particularly, schools where diversity is in the spotlight. Julie Corsaro
