A tale of family, friendship and secrets, from a well-loved author - 1902, Bath. When the housekeeper suddenly resigns, seventeen-year-old housemaid Daisy is left to cope alone with the almost bedridden owner of the house, Montague Pennington, Esq. Monty’s unpleasant relations begrudgingly search for a new housekeeper, as lively Daisy takes charge. However serious problems arise as a mysterious stranger begins to target the entire family. It seems that the Penningtons hold dark secrets, and the past cannot be suppressed for much longer . . .

About the Author:
Pamela Oldfield's books have been translated into Spanish, German and Russian. Her adult novels are described as a blend of historical fiction and family saga, each one thoroughly researched with the help of her husband, Joseph, who photographs and videos the various locations necessary for the backgrounds.
Review:
In steadfast British author Oldfield's standalone historical tale of suspense set in 1902 in and around Bath, Miss Dutton abruptly resigns as housekeeper to the elderly and bedridden Montague Pennington. Monty's overbearing siblings convince earnest yet reluctant young housemaid Daisy to take her place until another, more qualified candidate is found. Somewhat to their surprise, Monty and Daisy find themselves getting along quite well without help, but Daisy's rapidly approaching eighteenth birthday and the secrets to be revealed, as well as her burgeoning romantic interest in a solicitor's clerk and an unbalanced stranger who threatens their very lives, provide continuing drama. Oldfield's genius for developing patently unlikable characters until the reader sympathizes with their circumstances is once again displayed to good effect here. -- Booklist, April 1, 2011
