From Booklist:
Focusing on participation and aimed at the estimated 43 million disabled people in America today, this timely and informative directory combines personal testimony with useful directory-style information covering a variety of areas.

The first part of the book focuses on the personal, beginning with the story of Jean Driscoll, assistant coach, Wheelchair Track and Field, University of Illinois, who is a six-time wheelchair winner of the Boston Marathon. Persistence, courage, and willpower shine through her words as she tells of her struggle to accept her disability and to succeed in athletics. Seven short chapters follow, each written by a disabled person or someone involved with the disabled.

The second part of the book is a directory of organizations, services, and funding sources for those disabled interested in participating in sports. First is a directory of clubs and organizations. In addition to the usual address, telephone number, and contact person, the entries give a description of the club or association, the sports it handles, programs and services, scholarships and awards, and any publications available from the organization. More than 50 organizations are listed, including various local chapters, where applicable. Entries range from the National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis through such well-known organizations as Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Special Olympics.

College recreation and sports departments are profiled next, followed by camps. A section on travel and tourism focuses on national parks and other sites of interest, highlighting areas and attractions that are accessible. A special section on wheelchair basketball lists the women's division, youth division, independents, conferences, and conference members. A state-by-state guide offers information on locating assistive technology. Information is included about the Americans with Disabilities Act, and an index of associations, camps, and schools is followed by an index of sports and activities. This excellent handbook belongs in all school and public library collections.
