Paperback. Condition: Good. 2nd. xii, 339 pages, illustrations; 26 cm. Good+. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Moderate edgewear to wraps. Another copy available. "A founding partner in the legendary architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, Stanford White designed numerous urban masterpieces, including Judson Memorial Church, Washington Square Arch, Madison Square Garden, the Players, Metropolitan, and Colony Clubs, and now-vanished palazzi for a remarkable list of clients that included the Whitneys, the Vanderbilts, the Pulitzers, and the Stuyvesant Fishes. In the years since White's death, he has been both reviled as 'depraved' and praised as 'the greatest designer that this country has ever produced.' This amusing, scholarly, and elegant account of White's love affair with, and legacy to, New York City provides compelling evidence in support of the latter view." - Publisher. CONTENTS: 1. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First edition. First edition, first printing. Fine in very good dust jacket with some wear about the edges. Hardcover. xii+ 117 pp. with bibliography, index. Profusely illustrated with photographs and design prints. Stanford White (1853-1906) was a leading American architect during New York's Beaux Arts period of the late ninethhen and early twentieth centuries. The robber barons, wheat kings and Wall Street wizards of the time had their dreams of grandiose residences and other buildings translated into castles of luminous beauty that left the architect's mark on the age. His masterpieces included the Washington Square Arch, the Players, Metropolitan and Colony clubs, the original Madison Square Garden, and the now vanished Fifth Avenue palaces of the Whitneys, Vanderbilts, and Pulitzers. Despite his architectural work, however, White is mainly remembered today as the shooting victim of the famous love triangle---White, his 16 year old mistress and minor actress, and her deranged husband Harry K. Thaw. Thaw confronted White during the finale of a play being performed at Madison Square Garden and fired three shots at point blank range killing White. The murder trial was called by newspapers of the time "The Trial of The Century". During the trial White's private life came under great (negative) scrutiny. The first trial resulted in a hung jury and a mistrial; at the second trial, Thaw was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

An exploration of the architectural and cultural history of one of America's greatest cities, a city whose architectural heritage was recklessly squandered during the second half of the 20th century. There are over 200 photographs and prints illuminating the decades when Gustavus Swift and Philip D. Armour ruled the greatest stockyards in the world; when industrialists and entrepreneurs such as Cyrus McCormick, Potter Palmer, George Pullman and Marshall Field financed construction that made Prairie Avenue and State streets the rivals of New York's Fifth Avenue; when Dankmer Adler, William Le Baron Jenney, Louis Sullivan, John Wellburn Root, Daniel Burnham, Martin Holabird and Frank Lloyd Wright were designing buildings of incomparable excellence. 272 pages.
