First Edition Signed
First edition of Roberts' account of the legendary chess match. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. With an original first day cover from the World Chess Championship 1972 in Reykjavik signed by Bobby Fischer and his coach William Lombardy laid in. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Author photograph by Alfred Wegener. The first day cover is in fine condition. The World Chess Championship 1972 between challenger Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union took place in the Laugardalshà ll arena in ReykjavÃk, Iceland, and has been dubbed the Match of the Century. Fischer became the first American born in the United States to win the world title. His win also ended, for a short time, 24 years of Soviet domination of the World Championship. Fischer's crushing victory made him an instant celebrity. He appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, made television appearances on a Bob Hope special and The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, and was offered numerous product endorsement offers worth millions of dollars, all of which he declined.
