The sublime beauty and awesome power of the great cataract have made it a magnet for statesmen and stuntmen, poets and poseurs, ordinary sightseers and exceptional visionaries. This book traces the history of the Falls and those drawn to it: industrialists who come to harness its power, movie stars who come to garner publicity, photographers who come to test new techniques, and honeymooners who come to start new lives. As Pierre Berton shows, the history of the Falls is a chronicle filled with exceptional characters: Charles Blondin, the French daredevil who crossed the Falls on a high wire; John Roebling, the engineer who spanned the Niagara gorge before he built the Brooklyn Bridge; Henry Perky, the inventor of shredded wheat; and Robert Moses, the "Power Broker" himself. Light Creasing on Front, Rear Covers, Spine; Front, Rear Covers, Spine Lightly Chipped; Spine Slightly Cocked; Slight Yellowing Due to Age. TV TIE-IN: This series of novels was the basis for the 2001 TV series of the same name. SYNOPSIS: Travis Lindsay, his best friend, Nish, and all their pals on the Screech Owls hockey team, are on their way to New York for an international peewee tournament. Excitement builds in the team van on the way to Lake Placid. First there are the entertaining antics of their trainer, Mr. Dillinger - then there's the prospect of playing on an Olympic rink, in a huge arena, knowing there will be scouts in the stands. But they have barely arrived when things start to go wrong. Their star centre, Sarah, plays badly from lack of sleep. Next Travis gets knocked down in the street. And then someone starts tampering with equipment. It looks as if someone is trying to sabotage the Screech Owls. But who? And why? And can Travis and the others stop the destruction before the decisive game of the tournament? Mystery at Lake Placid is the first book in the Screech Owls Series by Roy MacGregor. Roy MacGregor has been involved in hockey all his life. Growing up in Huntsville, Ontario, he played minor hockey, including several years against Bobby Orr, who was playing in nearby Parry Sound. He later returned to the game when he and his family settled in Ottawa, where he works for the Ottawa Citizen and is the Southam National Sports Columnist. He still plays old-timers hockey and has been a minor-hockey coach for more than a decade. Roy MacGregor is the author of several classics in the literature of hockey. Home Game, which he wrote with Ken Dryden, is a former No. 1 national bestseller. He also wrote the game's best-known novel, The Last Season, and had another bestseller in 1993 with Road Games: A Year in the Life of the NHL. His most recent work of adult non-fiction is The Home Team: Fathers, Sons and Hockey. He has also written books about Native leaders and the Ottawa Valley. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

TV TIE-IN: This series of novels was the basis for the 2001 TV series of the same name. SYNOPSIS: The Screech Owls are on the road again, on a bumpy plane ride way up North that will land them in some very deep trouble! When Jesse Highboy's dad asked the Screech Owls how they felt about going to James Bay to play in the First Nations Pee Wee Hockey Tournament, everyone thought it was a great idea. It was the first time a non-native team had been invited, and the pressure would be on the Owls to live up to the honour and play some good clean hockey. More important, Travis and his teammates would also get the chance to stay with local native families, eat traditional food, travel by Ski-Doo, and experience what life in the North is all about. But freezing to death all alone in the bush, with a storm howling and the dreaded Trickster stalking the night? No one had asked the Screech Owls how they felt about that! Set in St. John's, Newfoundland, in 1967, this is the story of a nine-year-old boy "with a myth-making imagination," and his eccentric family. There seem to be three versions of this title: the one with the major typographical error, the one correcting that error (which was caught early in the game, making the corrected version by far the most common), and the one missing an entire leaf. This is the latter, missing pages 213/4, and seems even scarcer than the variant with the error. Pink cloth w/yellow spine lettering, 233 pages. Moderate wear to corners/spine ends, a couple of impressions to front cover, light foxing to top edge, in moderately edgeworn dust jacket w/short edge tears to spine ends, 1" tear to top edge of front panel, moderately sunned spine (a common flaw with this title), sunning to rear panel, some rubbing, thin scratches. SYNOPSIS: If you think that writing to your MP is the way to get things done, welcome to the real world of Ottawa, the world of The Insiders. Over the past twenty years - and especially since Brian Mulroney gained power in 1984 - our political system has changed completely. Now every big corporation has an Ottawa "consultant" on retainer. And these consultants, who know how to "get things done," are very powerful, and very very rich. How the system has changed, who the people are that have changed it, and how the new order affects you, are the subjects of this closely researched, startling expose by Canada's top investigative journalist. Ranging from the days of Lester Pearson's cabinet to the present, author John Sawatsky unveils the behind-the-scenes players that have shaped Canadian polity. With methodical detail, he traces the devastating picture of how our country now operates, and who's really minding the store. The Insiders will be a revelation, even to those who thought they knew how national politics - and Canada - works. Born in Manitoba and raised in Abbotsford, B.C., John Sawatsky went from Simon Fraser University to work for the Vancouver Sun in 1970. In 1975 he was sent to Ottawa, where he soon established a reputation as in investigative reporter, winning the Michener Award for public service journalism in 1976. His first book, Men in the Shadows, came out in 1980, followed by For Services Rendered, which won the Periodical Distributors Award for Book of the Year in 1983. Since publishing Gouzenko in 1984, he has held the Max Bell chair of journalism at the University of Regina. Now resident in Ottawa, he teaches part time at Carleton University's School of Journalism. Since 1982, the man who got the Mounties to talk has turned his investigative talents loose on the shadowy Ottawa world of the lobbyists, on which he is now the acknowledged authority. Old Newf! Farley Mowat '89", 330 pages, ---"Comprehensive history in terms of time (from the last Ice Age to the mid twentieth century) Mowat combines historical research with a personal experience of living on "The Rock" to make a facinatingly delicious, sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant read.
