Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This practical and comprehensive guide demonstrates the essential interpersonal skills and techniques - including reflecting, paraphrasing, summarizing and empathy - which can be used to counsel the depressed person. The book explores the complexities of the depressive experience and examines the central issues of abandonment, sense of failure, powerlessness, shame and guilt inherent in the nature of depression. Paul Gilbert illustrates the absolute need for the counsellor to be aware of the fragility and negativity of the depressive state and focuses on the importance for both client and counsellor of the therapeutic relationship and the role of the guided discovery. Using carefully chosen illustrations and case examples, Gilbert traces the steps appropriate at different stages in the counselling process and shows how the counsellor can help the client to change, and to take over the whole method of change, in order to cope independently. A final section looks at the special problems which arise in depressed clients. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Kitemarked by the TTA `It will be a welcome companion to the many activity-related primary science programmes which have been published in the last ten years in England. It will fill a gap for teachers of primary science world wide too, as its examples are most generally available, and, though it complements The National Curriculum, it is not tied uniquely to it, either in the language it uses or the topics it includes' - International Science Journal `The author has written a fine book which is a bold attempt to offer information and guidance to those teachers who declare a lack of confidence in their background knowledge of science' - Primary Science Review `A publication such as this was long overdue and will be warmly welcomed by many. Highly recommended for schools and primary student teachers' - Child Education Based on the requirements of The National Curriculum but not confined to them, the book sets out the facts, develops the concepts and explains the theories needed to understand the observations and investigations which children at primary level are likely to undertake. The aim has been to meet the needs of all primary teachers and their pupils, including those working towards the Attainment Targets at levels 4 and 5, as set out in the Statutory Orders issued in January 1995. This has meant a fundamental rethink of the way in which many science topics are approached and developed, in order to avoid the use of ideas and theories which are too abstract and remote from children's and teachers' own experience. Ideas and explanations are supported throughout by practical examples and demonstrations, most of which can be readily adapted for use in the classroom. The text does not assume a great deal of specialized scientific knowledge, but it does assume that readers will be willing to try things out for themselves and think again about experiences which they and their pupils may at present take for granted. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. `I wish that this useful book had been available during my years as an early years co-ordinator and teacher in charge of a nursery unit. All aspects of nursery teaching are analyzed in depth, and the author leaves the reader in no doubt about the specialist skills and versatility needed to be a nursery teacher or leader. I found the book absorbing and was particularly interested in the practical solutions to some of the difficult problems nursery teachers encounter. As well as being a fascinating book to read, it is also a valuable reference tool and ideal for planning training sessions in aspects of nursery management, such as policy writing, monitoring quality, providing equal opportunities, planning and assessment. There are useful summaries and discussion prompts at the end of each chapter. It is obvious that the author has experienced the joys and frustrations of nursery teaching and is able to give excellent advice to others in the same position. The book is a must for all nursery teachers/leaders and would be useful to those working or training to work within early years classrooms. It will also be of interest to policy makers and other members of nursery teams - Practical Pre-School The work of the nursery teacher is explored in depth in this book. The author draws on her own experience as nursery teacher, advisory teacher, nursery school headteacher and specialist consultant, and on the views of teachers working in the field. Since the First Edition was published in 1991 (when the author was known as Margaret Lally) the role of the nursery teacher has been undermined further by national and local political initiatives. More and more teachers, not initially trained for the age group, have found themselves working with nursery-aged children, but their need for support has gone largely unrecognized. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Building on the success of David Silvermans Interpreting Qualitative Data, this book assembles a well-known international team of researchers who share a commitment to rigorous, analytically derived but nonpolarized, qualitative research. Each contribution reflects on the analysis of each of the kinds of data discussed in Interpreting Qualitative Data - observations, texts, talk and interviews - with the contributors using particular examples of data-analysis to advance analytic arguments. Common themes include: the centrality of the relationship between analytic perspectives and methodological issues; the need to broaden our conception of qualitative research beyond issues of subjective `meaning and towards issues of language, representation and social organization; and the desire to search for ways of building links between social science traditions and a commitment to a dialogue between social science and the community. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. `This book examines the literacy development and assessment of children before the age of five years. It is highly relevant to all those professionally involved in assessment. Cathy Nutbrown explores the need for appropriate assessment practice to support teachers and illustrates the mismatch between the way teachers and researchers assess literacy. The book is worth buying for the final chapter alone, which provides an analysis of the newly developed Sheffield Early Literacy Development Profile. The actual tasks are included in the appendices. Thus, Cathy Nutbrown does not leave us frustrated. We are able to consider an ongoing assessment which is in tune with the best practice in teaching. This is a research text which balances theory with practical realism. It is particularly relevant today with the introduction of Baseline Assessment. Teachers and researchers will find much that they can relate to and learn from. It is clearly written and deserves to be widely read. However, it may make for uncomfortable reading as Cathy Nutbrown challenges all concerned with the assessment of early literacy development to reflect on exactly what they are doing and why' - British Educational Research Recognising Early Literacy Development presents a new view of the many purposes of assessment in early literacy development. Issues in early literacy assessment, current assessment material, the purposes of literacy assessment, government policy, practice in schools, baseline assessment of literacy, the need for new research measures of early literacy, are all recurrent themes of the book. The author reviews and discusses three decades of policy and practice in assessing literacy development in the years 3 to 5 - from recognising in the late 1960s that literacy in these years exists, to proposals in 1997 for official assessment of literacy at 5 years. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Condition: Very Good. `I love the warmth and wit in this book, but I say this in no way to detract from the seriousness of its subject matter and its incisive treatment by Mary Crawford. this is a great book and an important book which articulates current critical thinking about research around gender and language. Mary Crawford writes brilliantly, powerfully and lucidly. I thoroughly recommend it' - British Psychological Society Psychology of Women Section Newsletter This refreshing re-evaluation of current wisdom - both academic and popular - about men's and women's language critically assesses the abundant social science research of recent years and its representation in the mass media. Exploring a wide range of topics, from talk shows to self-help books, Mary Crawford offers a new understanding of the role of language practices in both maintaining - and disrupting - gender inequality. The book addresses such provocative questions as: Why has the study of gender and language so often focused on the limitations of women's talk? How do academic practices constrain our understanding of how gender relations are re-created and maintained in language use? Why do assertiveness texts usually ignore indirect modes of speech such as humour and storytelling? The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Fine. `The authors bring a spark of vitality and life to an area that could be cynically viewed as a series of conflicting fads and fashions.I would recommend anyone in the process of reviewing or designing an entrepreneurship development course to consider the benefits that this book would bring to the teaching process' - Entrepreneurship and Innovation `Using fiction in the classroom as an approach to stimulating the study of people in organizations is well-established. What this book contributes is a way of exploring some of the existential elements of life in organizations, which are typically difficult to study. It will be on my reading lists. Hopefully, this example, and regrettably few others which exist, will contribute in the long term to the reformulation of how the lived experience of organizational life may be explored in the classroom' - Leadership & Organization Development Journal Based on courses taught by the authors over many years, this innovative text is a lively and accessible analysis of people at work and the problems they have to confront. The student is introduced to a range of key themes in management such as: power and identity; consumption and bureaucracy; rational choice and meaning all through the medium of characters and situations in contemporary literature. The clear theoretical framework, supported by footnotes, summaries and further reading guides, makes this an introduction to management the student will find useful as well as enjoyable.
