Book
Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. Second Impression. 96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, drawings, family tree on endpapers. "This is a good book about children, and a wonderful book about rich children. Though it was conceived originally only for private distribution, it would have been a shame had the matter ended there. The author's upbringing - she is a granddaughter of the first Lord Cowdray - suffered from very few limitations of budget, but she was, by her own account, a shy and pessimistic child (imagine the frustrations of being a pessimist about the Pearsons!) who viewed with dismay some of the side effects of her good fortune. (This) is a sympathetic, funny, unreproachful book, a bonanza for the social historian, and written with a real feeling for the essence of childhood." Book is slightly cocked, minor bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light wear at top of spine, minor rubbing.

Slim hardback in the dust-jacket; 188, (4) pages; photographic plates and photos in the text. A near-Mint copy. Freccia (1906-2004) expresses candid views on other conductors in this sizzling autobiography of life as a symphony conductor. He is highly critical of his baton-wielding contemporaries most of them, he writes, were too conceited, mistrustful and even occasionally vicious. Sir Thomas Beecham, for instance, "emphasised his pomposity" by his poses and pretensions. "Not once have I been touched by his performances", he writes. Herbert von Karajan was "not a nice man", while Leopold Stokowski produced a lush sound, yet "one had the feeling that underneath there was something false. when one looked inside one found an infinite emptiness". Only Toscanini escapes a savaging, although Freccia conceded that his reputation for strict observance of the score was a myth. Book.
