Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Award-winning writer Paul Theroux draws upon personal experience of living in Malawi in his eye-opening novel, about one man's return to an Africa he no longer recognises, The Lower River. Decades ago Massachusetts salesman Ellis Hock spent four years in Africa - and the continent has never left him. So when his wife walks out and his business goes belly up, Ellis turns back to the one place in which he briefly found happiness. Yet returning to the village of Malabo shocks him. The school he built is a ruin. The people he remembers are poor, apathetic, hostile. The country labours as if under a great, invisible burden. However, Ellis is determined. This is his escape, a paradise regained. But escape can be a snare, a trap for the unwary . . . The Lower River is a hypnotic, compelling and brilliant return to a terrain no one has ever written better about than Paul Theroux: the tragic stage of modern Africa, AIDS-ravaged and despairing in the face of creeping consumerism, greed and dependence. 'Remarkable, admirable, riveting, heartbreaking. A masterly, moving portrait of how Africa ensnares and enchants' Guardian 'Terrific writing. Theroux's senses are always on full alert' Evening Standard 'Powerful, vivid, shocking' The Times 'Theroux invests this very 21st-century journey into the heart of ennui with a caustic bite, like the snakes that pop up throughout' Metro 'The sense of menace is masterful. Theroux has never written a better novel' Sunday Telegraph American travel writer Paul Theroux is known for the rich descriptions of people and places that is often streaked with his distinctive sense of irony; his novels and collected short stories, My Other Life, The Collected Stories, My Secret History, The Stranger at the Palazzo d'Oro, A Dead Hand, Millroy the Magician, The Elephanta Suite, Saint Jack, The Consul's File, The Family Arsenal, The Mosquito Coast, and his works of non-fiction, including the iconic The Great Railway Bazaar are available from Penguin. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. THE BOOK IS MADE TO ORDER AND IT TAKES 2 TO 4 WEEKS FOR IT TO BE READY FOR SHIPPING *****SIZE - 8 x 5.5 inches (21 x 13.5 cm). *****EDITION - 2 of 100, initialled and numbered. *****If you are interested in a different title, send me a message and I will give you a quote.*****Book's original ISBN 978-0241957745*****Books, as much as experiences, change my life, and I decided to make a limited collection of all the books I read and loved. And maybe you also will find in my collection a book that you enjoyed, and it even might have influenced your life.*****The book is a soft cover which I recycle and transform into a limited edition, personalized hardback with leather cover, designed and made by me. First, I prepare the book by embedding cotton cords into the spine. Adding 2 mm wood boards to the front and back. And reinforcing everything with cloth. To make the cover I use grade A, naturally tanned hide, I buy from a tannery in north Spain. It is the same leather Louis Vuitton uses to make his bags, so it is top quality. I do all the processing of the leather myself. First, I design the cover, and what I did here I took a painting of an African village, and a young girl, Dzidzi like, caring nourishment for somebody, could be Hock. Next, I mix leather inks and screen them on the surface of the leather. The inks are partly absorbed by the skin to create a permanent bond. Finally, I coat the leather with protective solution. The leather gives the image a vintage look and beautiful texture, and it will age nicely with time. Inside the front cover. I can print a personal message or a quote from the book. The book is beautiful. Visually it has a very nice texture, it smells great, and the more you handle it the more beautiful it will become. And it makes a great gift for yourself, or somebody who appreciates books. So if you want one, don't snooze, or you might lose.*****RETURNS: This is a custom-made item, so returns or exchanges are not accepted. But you can contact me if there is any problem with your order. *****COLORS: Since I make each item to order, the color might vary from the pictures. It depends on how the inks mix and how they react with leather. *****SHIPPING: I make each item to order, and it takes a few weeks, since I need to find the book first. I go to the post office once a week. Estimated delivery time is about two weeks, but it depends on the postal service and customs. And occasionally there are delays, and it might take a month or so to arrive.
